Games that fit in a jacket pocket

A jacket pocket is about 180mm. Here is what clears it.

By Scooter M. - - How we pick

A very small board game bag next to a jacket

A jacket pocket is roughly 180mm across, which rules out most board game boxes. Hive Pocket clears it at a published 140mm x 140mm x 50mm, and leaving its box behind for the included soft bag makes it smaller still. Love Letter is the smallest card option.

Pocket-sized is the most abused phrase in board game marketing. It generally means smaller than a normal box, which is not the same thing as fitting in a pocket.

The useful number is about 180mm. That is roughly the widest thing a jacket pocket takes without looking absurd, and it is a hard filter that most so-called travel editions fail.

What actually clears 180mm

  • Hive Pocket -- published by Gen42 at 140mm x 140mm x 50mm, 28 parts including a soft travel bag. Clears it comfortably, and it is a genuinely excellent game rather than a compromise.
  • Love Letter -- a short deck and a handful of tokens. Smaller than any box on this list; the exact dimensions depend on which edition you buy.
  • Hive standard -- published at 210mm x 210mm x 50mm. Does not clear it. This is exactly the sort of box that gets called portable and is not pocketable.
  • Everything else we recommend is a standard card game box or larger. Jaipur, Lost Cities and The Fox in the Forest all travel well in a bag and none of them goes in a jacket.

The trick most people miss: leave the box at home

Both Hive editions ship with a soft travel bag, and that changes the arithmetic entirely. Carry the bag, leave the box on the shelf, and the game becomes a soft lump about the size of a pair of socks that cannot be crushed.

This works for Hive specifically because there is nothing fragile: 22 or 26 tactile pieces with no cards to bend, no board to fold and no tokens to lose in a lining. Try the same trick with a card game and you arrive with a creased deck.

For card games the equivalent move is a small rigid tin or a deck box. It costs a few pounds and it is the difference between a game surviving a trip and a game surviving one trip.

Pocket size is not the only constraint

A game that fits your pocket still has to be playable where you are going. Two things decide that and neither is on the box.

First, does it need a surface? Hive does not -- the tiles build their own board on any flat thing including the ground. Every card game does, at minimum a lap.

Second, does wind end it? Cards outdoors are a problem with no fix. If the pocket in question belongs to a walking jacket rather than a commuting one, Hive is the answer and Love Letter is not, regardless of which is smaller.

What we will not tell you

We are not going to print millimeter figures for games whose publishers do not state them. Gen42 publishes dimensions for both Hive editions and that is why those numbers appear above.

For the others, the reliable route is the publisher's page or the retail listing for the exact edition you are buying -- editions differ, and a reprint is not always the same box. An invented dimension is worse than none, because you would pack on the strength of it.

Love Letter

Plays at two2 to 6 (Second Edition) players · 20 minutes

The smallest game we recommend, and at two it becomes a tight deduction duel rather than a party filler.

A supports-more microgame that sharpens at two. You hold one card, draw a second, and play one -- deducing what the other person is holding from what they discard.

Common questions

+What is the smallest two-player board game?

Of the games we recommend, Love Letter is the smallest -- a short deck and a few tokens. Hive Pocket is the smallest full board game at a published 140mm x 140mm x 50mm.

+Does Hive Pocket fit in a jacket pocket?

At 140mm x 140mm x 50mm it clears the roughly 180mm a jacket pocket takes. Using the included soft travel bag instead of the box makes it smaller and unsquashable.

+Are card games good for pockets?

They are small but they crease. A rigid tin or deck box is a cheap fix and the difference between a game surviving many trips and surviving one.

+What is the best pocket game for outdoors?

Hive Pocket. Cards blow away and bend, while Hive's tiles cannot, and the game needs no table because the pieces form their own playing surface.
