Duel for Middle-earth is 7 Wonders Duel's designers, Antoine Bauza and Bruno Cathala, taking the structure that made their earlier game the two-player benchmark and rebuilding it around The Lord of the Rings. That is not a criticism -- it is the whole pitch.
The honest question for a buyer is how much overlap there is, and the answer is: a lot, with one real difference.
02What is the same
The skeleton. Three successive chapters, a card layout you draft from, and three separate ways to win, any of which ends the game the moment it triggers. If you have played 7 Wonders Duel, the shape of Duel for Middle-earth will be familiar within a turn.
The alliance win in Middle-earth -- gather 6 different symbols -- is the science win from Duel with different art. The region-control win maps loosely onto the military track. The Quest of the Ring is the genuinely new one.
03What is actually different: asymmetry
7 Wonders Duel is symmetric. Both players have the same tools and the same routes to victory, and a loss is a clean statement that the other person played better.
Duel for Middle-earth is not. One side is the Fellowship, trying to get Frodo and Sam to Mount Doom; the other is Sauron, trying to catch them with the Nazgul. The two sides play the Quest of the Ring from opposite ends, which means they experience the game differently and a head-to-head record between you is less directly comparable.
For some households that asymmetry is the reason to buy it. For a pair who like a straight, fair contest, it is the reason to stay with the original.
