Buy 7 Wonders Duel if you want direct conflict and a game that punishes looking away. Buy Splendor Duel if you want a race rather than a fight -- you compete for a shared board but never touch each other's cards. Both are 2 players, 30 minutes, ages 10+.

These are the two most-compared two-player games in print right now, and the comparison is unusually fair: Bruno Cathala co-designed both, both are published for exactly two players, and both are stated at 30 minutes for ages 10 and up.
They also answer opposite questions. One is about denying your opponent. The other is about outpacing them.
02Denial versus racing
7 Wonders Duel is built on a shared card pyramid where taking a card uncovers others, so every pick is also a decision about what you hand the other player. Two of its three win conditions -- military and science -- end the game instantly, which means you spend the whole game watching clocks that belong to your opponent.
Splendor Duel is built on a shared gem board you both draw from. The tension is in what you take before they can, and in the Privilege scrolls that let you break the normal turn rhythm. But you never do anything to the other player's cards or engine. If they built a better engine, they win, and there is nothing to do about it except build faster.
That is the whole decision. Denial games feel sharp and occasionally hostile. Racing games feel tense but never personal.
03Which one suits a household
If one of you dislikes being attacked, Splendor Duel is the clear choice. It has the competitive edge of a real duel with none of the direct conflict, and that combination is rare.
If you both genuinely enjoy competing, 7 Wonders Duel is the deeper game and the instant-win conditions give it a tension Splendor Duel does not attempt. It is also the one people still find new lines in at game one hundred.
Teach time is close. Both use a symbol language and both need a game before the turns flow, though Splendor Duel's is smaller.
